The developer used the Google Nest Mini, replaced its PCB and MCU, and came up with a solution that uses AI for a powerful AI voice assistant. The project gives us an idea of how smart speakers work with AI. The Google Nest Mini is a great smart speaker that can do a lot despite its small package. But in this day and age of AI , a simple Google Assistant speaker can feel somewhat underpowered. While we're crossing our fingers for AI smart speakers to arrive soon, you can take matters into your own hands and make your own Google Nest Mini. Twitter user Justin Alvey modified his Google Nest Mini to control his LLM model, agent, and voice. I've jailbroken the Google Nest Mini so you can control your LLM, agents, and voice models. This is a demo to manage all my posts (with help from @onbeeper ) 🔊 Activate and wait for a surprise guest! The hacking process starts with replacing the PCB, which is already something that most ordinary users can do themselves. But if you choose this process, you can use an inexpensive, developer-friendly Wi-Fi chip that works well with a variety of audio frames. This, in turn, opens up the ability to use the speaker for audio and voice detection while offloading AI processing to a more powerful local machine. Furthermore, the solution relies on Beeper.
universal chat application. This is where messages come in and are parsed through the API. The developer then uses GPT 3.5 for message summarization and other AI tasks. The output is fed into the ElevenLabs text-to-speech engine. The result of this experimental project is an interesting idea of what smart speakers would sound like if AI supported them. I've experimented with a few of these, announcing important messages as they come in, morning briefings, jotting down ideas and notes, and viewing agents. I couldn't resist - here's a fun video (so scripted!) of two people talking to Country Email List what they think are AIs from “ pic.twitter.com/f9lOUciO3Y The developer said they are working on open source PCB design, build instructions, software, bot and server code. We should have a better idea of what's going on under the hood when they're open source. However, it was an interesting project to witness. It gives us an idea of what the future of artificial intelligence could be in our daily lives. Instead of having an intelligent speaker read things out, AI can make it even more valuable by summarizing our notifications.
It would also be fantastic to fit all of this software magic into a tiny Google Nest Mini device. It is true that the processing in this project was done on another machine, but it is not so different that the Nest Mini needs a constant Internet connection to work with Assistant.
